Abingdon Episcopal Church

Abingdon Episcopal Church

Abingdon Episcopal Church is located on Rt. 17 almost midway between Gloucester Court House and Gloucester Point. This rare cruciform (Latin Cross) colonial church which replaced an earlier church on this same site, was completed in 1755 and underwent major restoration in 1986. It is one of eight churches of colonial Virginia. It has brick walls over two feet thick, laid in Flemish-bond, a unique three-tiered pulpit and magnificent pipe organ. Abingdon Church is the largest colonial church in Virginia and the third largest in all the colonies. Adjacent cemetery contains gravestones dating from the mid 1600's.

Ware Episcopal Church

Ware Episcopal Church

Ware Episcopal Church is located on Route 14. This early 17th century structure, which served as encampments for federal and confederate soldiers, is surrounded by a colonial brick wall and an interesting graveyard with beautiful plantings.

This second church of the parish is an excellent example of the early colonial Virginia churches built in the form of a rectangle. It has beautiful inside woodwork and still retains its original three entrances in unaltered form. These entrances are of special interest as they exhibit very early examples of the brick doorways so typical of colonial Virginia's ecclesiastical architecture.
