Animal Control Information

Rabies Inoculation - All dogs, cats and ferrets by 4 months of age must have been inoculated or vaccinated against rabies by currently licensed veterinarian or by an animal technician certified pursuant to the Code of Virginia.

County License - All dogs over the age of 4 months old must have a county license. The county license must be worn on the dog at all times unless the dog is competing in a dog show or when the dog has a skin condition which would be exacerbated by the wearing of a collar. The cost of the county license is as follows;

a) $6.00 for each male or female dog

b) $3.00 for an unsexed dog

c) $25.00 for kennels with not more than 10 dogs

d) $35.00 for kennels with not less than 11 nor more than 20 dogs

e) $50.00 for kennels containing 21 dogs or more

Exotic Animal Permit - All exotic animal owners must purchase a permit within 10 working days of the animal entering the county (including animals already in the county prior to December 1, 2002).  Initial permit fee is $25.00 per address.  Annual permit renewal is $15.00.  For additional information see Animal Laws - County Ordinances

A new county license or permit is required each year and must be purchased prior to January 31.  Licenses/permits are available for purchase starting November 1st in the Treasurer's Office.

Cats do not require a county license.



Legal Information

Fines ( Maximum ) of $250.00 Dogs, cats and ferrets by 4 months of age not having a rabies shot;  Dogs not having a county license;  Dogs not wearing a county license;  Failure of owner to provide::

  • Adequate feed
  • Adequate water
  • Adequate shelter that is properly cleaned
  • Adequate space
  • Adequate exercise
  • Adequate care, treatment, and transportation
  • Veterinary care when needed or to prevent suffering or disease
        transmission

Fines ( Maximum ) of $500.00 Dogs running at large in leash law areas.

Fines ( Maximum ) of $2500.00 and/or a term of imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than five years (Class 6 Felony)    Cruelty to animals
