Meetings of the Gloucester Board of
Supervisors are held at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the
Old
Courthouse, located in the Court Circle, 6504 Main Street, Gloucester,
Virginia,
with the exception of the month of December.
Special Meetings and Adjourned Meetings
will be held as deemed necessary and at such times and places as it may find convenient. A
special meeting can only be called following the requirements imposed by Sections
15.2-1417 and 15.2-1418 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended. Adjourned
Meetings are meetings continued from earlier meetings.
Executive Sessions
are closed meetings held only for
those purposes specifically provided by law to include discussion of specific personnel
cases, disposition of publicly held property, investment of public funds, and consultation
with legal counsel.
Public Hearings are required by the Code of Virginia
to be scheduled on certain proposed changes in the Gloucester County Code, for Zoning
Changes and certain other issues to hear citizens views. Public hearings are
advertised in the legal section of the Gazette Journal.
Ordinances are formal enactments of a law.
Taxes and regulations are usually established by ordinance. Intention to
consider an ordinance is advertised in a local newspaper and on the "Public
Hearings and Proposed Ordinance" link on the Board of Supervisor's Homepage.
Citizens Comment Period is an opportunity for
citizens to address the board. At each regular meeting, the floor is open to citizens who
may wish to speak on any matter of concern. Each speaker at a Citizens Comment
Period shall be limited to 5 minutes and one appearance at each regular meeting.
Agendas
for regular and public hearings are published at least 94 hours prior to the scheduled meeting. The entire agenda package can
be reviewed on line on the "Meeting Docs" link of the Board of
Supervisor's Homepage or at the Gloucester County Public
Library.
Resolutions
are less formal actions and are used for use permits, administrative issues, and matters concerning making
appointments or appropriations or setting policies.
Proclamations is a ceremonial act, usually to
proclaim an event recognized in Gloucester County.
Appointments are made by
the Board of Supervisors.
Approximately 200 citizens are appointed to various boards, committees and commissions to
assist in governing Gloucester County. Citizens who wish to be considered for an
appointment can fill out a Volunteer
Board Bank Application form or contact the Office of Community Education,
93-5730, to
request an application form.
