Gloucester County
contains a variety of valuable natural resources including
wetlands, beaches, forests, rivers, streams and the plant and
animal communities that inhabit them. Highlighting the
county are vast salt marshes and expansive rivers and creeks,
winding their way adjacent to large tracts of forest and farmland.
These natural resources are unique
to the Chesapeake Bay Region and are not only important to
Gloucester's environment, but also play an important role in the
economic welfare of Gloucester County. For example, salt
marshes provide special habitat for finfish and shellfish,
offering unique feeding and breeding grounds in which to live and
develop. The survival of these organisms is directly related
to the quality of the salt marshes, which is critical to
Gloucester's commercial fishing industry. Similarly,
Gloucester's quality of life, recreational activities, and
property values are dependent upon healthy natural resources.
To help manage and protect these natural
resources, Gloucester County has adopted the following programs:
Chesapeake Bay Preservation, Erosion and Sediment Control,
Wetlands Protection , and Floodplain Management. These
programs are administered locally through the Gloucester County
Codes Compliance Office at 6582 Main Street, Gloucester, VA
(693-1217).
