Gloucester County Environmental Programs
Division of Codes Compliance is scheduling the annual Creek
Clean-ups on June 11, 2005. Clean-ups are scheduled along
the Perrin River (Crown Pointe Marina), Sarah Creek
(York River Yacht Haven Marina), and the Severn River
(Severn River Marina); these waterbodies collectively represent a
local portion of the Chesapeake Bay. This event will be held in
conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 17th annual
Clean the Bay Day. ( Click here for
pictures!)
The success of these events is dependent upon
volunteer participation. Volunteers are needed to assist with
registration, debris collection, and shuttling between clean-up
zones. Boat, kayak and canoe owners are encouraged to participate
however this is not a requirement to volunteer; there will be
plenty of space for all. This office will be working with the
County’s Parks and Recreation office for folks interested in
no-charge canoe use.
Volunteers may register at the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation website
www.cbf.org/clean, select Gloucester, and complete the
participation form. Interested individuals may also register to
participate by calling the Environmental Programs Office at
804-693-1217. All registered volunteers will be contacted prior
to the event. The clean-ups will follow the pattern of past years
events- participants will meet at the marinas at 8 a.m., review a
map of the water body, and assign zones to each group. We will
“Clean the Bay” until noon. We will
have plastic bags available at this office or for mailing to
property owners that may not be able to participate on the day of
the event (June11). They may clean their own shoreline and leave
the bags for us to pick-up. Call this office to coordinate bag
delivery and trash pick-up.
Following each Creek Clean-up the volunteers
will enjoy lunch on-site provided by sponsors. This year
we would like to provide each volunteer a “Clean the Bay Save
the Bay” T-shirt (pre-registration is encouraged to ensure that
volunteers get a shirt that fits)
The County’s past Creek Clean-ups have
received contributions from local business, state agencies, and
private donors. Financial assistance provided, in part, by the
Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program through
the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
