The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has developed the State Bicycle Policy Plan to ensure bicyclists are an integral component of Virginia’s multimodal transportation system, and to provide bicycle policy recommendations that will guide the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of bicycle accommodations.
The draft plan provides strategies and identifies opportunities for enhancing the implementation of the Commonwealth Transportation Board’s 2004 Policy for Integrating Bicycle and Pedestrian Accommodations, as well as VDOT’s coordination within the agency and with stakeholders across the commonwealth.
The VDOT State Bicycle Policy Plan, including a summary of recommendations is available for public review and comment beginning Monday, Aug. 16, and concluding Friday, Sept. 17, 2010.

| Planning:
The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC), in conjunction with local officials from the region’s six counties and three towns, is now in the process of updating the 2006 Middle Peninsula Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan. This plan seeks to identify and evaluate natural hazards that affect the region and then proposes a number of cost-effective mitigation strategies in an attempt to lessen the adverse impacts from future nature-based hazardous events.
A community meeting will be held on August 17, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room located in the Gloucester County Information Technology Building (Old Public Library Building) 6382 Main Street, Gloucester, to review a draft of the updated plan and the mitigation strategies that are being proposed, with a focus on the southern Middle Peninsula jurisdictions of Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex Counties. Staff and officials familiar with the plan will be available to go over its contents including the types of mitigation strategies that are being proposed.

| Planning:
On April 30, 2010, Governor McDonnell issued Executive Order 10, which established Virginia’s first executive housing policy framework. The Governor’s framework will guide the development of a statewide housing policy that will be announced in the fall.
The Governor`s housing policy will address homelessness and affordable housing, as well as workforce housing, economic development, healthy neighborhoods, effective coordination with transportation, environmental issues and other housing related opportunities. The housing policy is being developed under the leadership of Bob Sledd, as chair of the Housing Policy Work Group and Housing Policy Advisory Committee.
The Housing Policy Work Group held its first meeting on June 17 and is now seeking input in the form of suggestions for addressing the identified critical housing issues. Broad policy areas, initially identified by the Virginia Housing Commission in 2006, provided the initial structure for soliciting comments. The Housing Policy Work Group identified several questions under each policy area that they would like addressed.

Until November 15, 2009 VDOT will be taking comments on the proposed improvements to the Route 17 corridor from Gloucester Courthouse to Gloucester Point. The project consists of improvements to nine crossovers along this portion of Route 17. These access management based improvements include channelization and improvement of/construction of turn lanes for some and closure for others.

| Planning:
The Gloucester County Departments of Planning and Codes Compliance will sponsor a public informational meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 7pm at Achilles Elementary School to discuss the recommendations presented in the draft Floodplain Management Plan. This meeting is a follow-up meeting to two previous meetings held during the development of the county’s draft Floodplain Management Plan which is available for review in the Gloucester County Planning Department located at 6582 Main Street, Gloucester, Virginia, or on the County’s website at www.gloucesterva.info/planning.
At the meeting staff will provide information on the importance of planning for citizens living or working in flood prone areas. Additionally, the meeting will introduce the recommendations discussed in the draft plan and provide an opportunity for citizen input in this final editing phase of the plan. There will be a formal comment period and public hearings associated with the adoption of a Floodplain Management Plan in the following months. This meeting is not related to FEMA grant funding.

The Hampton Roads Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will host Public Information Meetings to receive comments on the draft Transit Vision Plan for Hampton Roads. The study area includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; and the counties of Isle of Wight, James City, York, and a portion of Gloucester County.
The draft Transit Vision Plan addresses local and express bus, bus rapid transit, light rail, commuter rail, and ridesharing. The draft plan can be viewed at: www.hamptonroadstransitplan.com.
