Public_Library_News: Please cut and paste the url into the address line to read more about the study the Library of Virginia is doing and fill out the survey by doing the same to the link at the end of this message. The Library of Virginia has contracted with Himmel & Wilson, Library Consultants, to conduct a study, “Inventing the Future of Public Library Service in Virginia.” Himmel & Wilson have been assisting public libraries, regional library systems, and state library agencies with their planning and evaluation needs for 17 years. They have conducted similar statewide studies of library service in several states. The study will focus on the 91 Virginia public library systems and the factors that influence the future of their development. The results of this study will assist the Library of Virginia (LVA) in assuring that the Commonwealth’s public libraries are prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century as valued community resources, responsive to the rapid changes in technology and society. More information on the study is available at http://vpl.lib.va.us/hwstudy/default.htm They have actually set up three URLs with an identical survey at each site. The difference is that the responses will go into separate databases so H&W will be able to separate the opinions of steering committee members from those of library directors and both of those categories from those held in the broader library community. Below is the URL for The GENERAL LIBRARY COMMUNITY: http://www.libraryconsultant.com/VirginiaRoles.htm You may remove your email address from the Gloucester Connection News Service by accessing the following web page. http://www.gloucesterva.info/gloucesterconnectiondb/ Send comments or suggestions about this service to webdevanalyst@gloucesterva.info (mailto:webdevanalyst@gloucesterva.info).

Public_Library_News: Dear Fellow Gloucestonian: We invite you to make a difference in Gloucester! Our Main Public Library has outgrown its limited space and needs a new home. We now have an opportunity to be a part of a new venture that will relocate the library to a building with sufficient space to serve the current and future needs of county residents. Mr. Edwin Joseph is leading a drive to create a Main Street Center with the purchase of the Gloucester Exchange Shopping Center. The property will be renovated and redesigned as a community center. The Library is programmed to fill the space formerly occupied by the IGA True Value grocery store. In this location, the Library will be the anchor for several other community service facilities planned for the center. We ask you to come to a Town Meeting on September 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in the T.C. Walker Elementary School auditorium to see the architect`s plans for the center and to hear presentations about what is possible for the Library and the Main Street Center. At this time you may ask questions and provide suggestions as to the uses for the Main Street Center. We would like you to have sufficient information so that you can make a commitment to become involved in revitalizing Gloucester’s community resources. This commitment, whether in the form of vocal support or financial contribution, is necessary to achieve our goal of a new home for the library and a Main Street Center containing community resources long dreamed of by Gloucester residents. If you have questions that need answers before the September 23rd meeting, please call Nancy Dwoyer, the Director of the Gloucester Library, at 804-693-2998..
