The Planning Department is staff to the Gloucester County Planning Commission.  As required by the Code of Virginia, every locality shall create a local Planning Commission to promote the orderly development of the locality and its environs.  In addition, the Planning Commission shall prepare a plan for the physical development of the County and the Board of Supervisors shall adopt a Comprehensive Plan.  The Planning Commission reviews, discusses and hears public comments on matters related to zoning and planning and makes formal recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, and rezonings.  The Planning Commission also reviews major subdivisions for compliance with the Subdivision Ordinance.

The Gloucester County Planning Commission consists of thirteen (13) members, one of whom is also a member of the Board of Supervisors.  The remaining twelve consist of two representatives from each of the five (5) Magisterial Districts and two representatives from the At-large District.  The Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Colonial Courthouse.

The Planning staff processes applications, provides back-up information and research for the Planning Commission, works with applicants to produce quality development in compliance with the County’s land development ordinances, and makes recommendations to the Commission regarding rezoning and major subdivision applications, code amendments and long range-planning.
