May is National Military Appreciation Month

"Patriots" who serve from the Heart! 
Not just those who serve and have served,
BUT those who volunteer their time to support our troops.

During National Military Appreciation Month, Gloucester’s NMAM Committee would like to acknowledge those at home who serve as patriots to our men and women in uniform, both  past and present!

A permanent "Battle of the Hook" exhibit will open at the Gloucester Museum of History.

Military Spouses Day - remember to say thank you to our Military's Support System... the Spouses!

13 Main Street Military Appreciation Day - specials, promotions or discounts at Main Street Businesses-advertisements will list participants.

15 Deadline to submit information on the "Patriots" who serve from the Heart campaign.

Flag Retirement Ceremony - Gloucester Library - 10 am  - Boy Scout Troop 111 will conduct the ceremony to retire over 100 American Flags that the Library has collected over the past year.  Rain date is May 23.

Annual Memorial Day  Service—4 PM, Courthouse Veterans Memorial

25 Gardner monument ceremony - 2:30-3 pm, Story of Gardner, wreath, bell ringing, moment of silence, taps and prayers.
25 Memorial Day - The Nation Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress, asks Americans wherever they are at 3 pm, local time, to pause in an act of national unity (duration: one minute).
30 7th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army Encampment- 10 am - 4 pm –  Colonial  Courthouse Circle – Sponsored by Parks, Recreation & Tourism 
30 UNDER THE STARS - Virginia Symphony Performance, Main Street - this free concert will include a Salute to the Military - sponsored by Cook Foundation, Main Street Preservation Trust, Gloucester Main Street Association, and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital

Month-Long Happenings: 

  • Gloucester Point Beach Park - free sno-cones, with military ID, on weekends and Memorial Day during the month of May.

  • The Gloucester Visitor Center continues to sponsor “A Million Thanks," a writing campaign to send messages of appreciation to military men & women on active duty in the Middle East.  STOP by the Center & fill out a card!

  • Gloucester Library also offers cards for the " Million Thanks."

  • Tuesdays are Military Appreciation Day at Beaverdam Park.  Free one hour rental of Paddle Boat or Canoe with Military ID.

  • Gloucester Museum of History - military items related to  those from Gloucester who served in the armed forces with extensive WWI & WWII collection.  A Viet Nam Conflict uniform will be on display for the first time in the museum as well as a pair of evening slippers which were worn by Gloucester's WWI nurse, Cornelia Thornton on display until June 30.

  • Gloucester County Resolution for Military Appreciation from May 3 through June 14.  Request for resolution.

May 2nd - Gloucester Board of Supervisors adopt resolution recognizing National Military Appreciation Month - 7 p.m.-Colonial Courthouse

May 6th - James D. Gardner-Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient plaque dedication & unveiling -

2 p.m. - Colonial Courthouse Green

May 7th - Library distributes Gloucester Military Appreciation Events Bookmark

May 9th - Beaverdam Park Military Appreciation Day - (1) hour free canoe / paddleboat rental for retired &

active duty military

May 12th - County Employees “Wear Red” in observance of National Military Appreciation Month

May 13th - Military Spouse Day-Gift of Chocolate to spouses-Library - 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

May 14th - Library sends paperback books to military in Middle East

May 16th - Beaverdam Military Appreciation Day - (1) hour free canoe / paddleboat rental for retired & active duty military

May 19th - County Employees “Wear Red” in observance of National Military Appreciation Month

· Lewis Burruss, author of “All That Matters” & other Viet Nam era books, & his daughter, discuss why she wants to follow in her father’s footsteps in the military - Library Community Room - 7 p.m.

May 21st - Ft. Monroe Military Band - 4 p.m. - Colonial Courthouse Green

May 23rd - Beaverdam Park Military Appreciation Day - (1) hour free canoe / paddleboat rental for retired & active duty military

May 26th - County Employees “Wear Red” in observance of National Military Appreciation Month

May 27th - 7th Virginia Regiment Plaque Ceremony - 3 p.m. - Colonial Courthouse

May 28th - American Legion Post 75 Memorial Day Ceremony - 4 p.m. - Colonial Courthouse Green

· Museum Special Opening from 1 - 4 p.m. to complement Memorial Day Ceremony

May 29th - Gloucester Point Beach Special Memorial Day Activities - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. for retirees & active duty families

May 30th -Beaverdam Park Military Appreciation Day - (1) hour free canoe / paddleboat rental for retired &

active duty military
