Walk the Walk

photo of man and woman walkingAPRIL 15 IS VIRGINIA START! WALKING DAY

Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism and Martin's Custom Designs, Inc. invite you to take the first step towards better health!

Let's talk the talk and Walk the Walk...It’s time to stop talking about better health...it's time to go get it!

There are lots of questions...we have lots of answers!  Where do I walk?  Parks, sidewalks, roads, anywhere you can find open space!  We have measured space along Main Street, Gloucester Point Beach Park, Beaverdam Park, Ark Park and Abingdon Park.  See our brochure for the specifics.  There is a 400 meter track behind Page Middle School and one at Bethel Elementary School.  And there is always your road, with a little car, its a great place to walk!  See pages 6-7 & 14-15 of our brochure.

But I need more help, what can I do?  Use our walking log (it's in our brochure brochure!)  A walking log is a tool to help you build your confidence, record your walking history and set your walking plan.  By logging your walks you can track where you enjoyed walking, where you disliked walking, walking partners, walking challenges and walking extras.  The extras are the beautiful birds you may see, the new shop you may notice, the friends house you may find.  See pages 8 & 9 of our brochure   Use a measuring device, like a pedometer.  Martin's Custom DeSigns has donated 500 pedometers to PR&T.  We began distributing them at Celebrate Families in March.  If you would like to have one, stop by our office (Monday-Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm) to pick up a copy of the Walk the Walk Program and a Pedometer.

What else can I do?  Use a food journal.  Like a walking journal a food journal will help you build your plan for eating better.  It is hard to remember everything that you eat in a day unless you write it down.  With a journal you will remember that mid afternoon snack or that driving home snack, it will help you know when a pattern is forming.  If you see the pattern you have a better chance of correcting it.  Once you see what you eat, it is easier to see where the changes need to be made.  See pages 10-14 & 16-19 of our brochure

Who should “Walk the Walk?”  EVERYONE!  This simple act can greatly improve your health, not to mention the benefits of getting a little fresh air!

We have developed a Walk the Walk Journal to help you keep track of your progress.

How do I use this journal?  This journal is offered as a guide to help you meet your goals.  First come up with goals (see below), then use the walking journal and food journal to help you make changes to meet your goals.  If you notice that you are eating cookies three times each afternoon, there is a change that you can make.  Drink water instead or walk an errand when you get that hungry feeling.  Mostly we hope that this journal will get you moving and get you thinking about your choices.  Come on “Walk the Walk!”

When you have reached your personal goals, you will receive a Walk the Walk Certificate, showing that you are joining the fight against obesity!
