Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office accepts applications for employment on a continual basis regardless of available positions. Submitted applications are actively kept on file for one year and only considered if a position is available. Active job openings are advertised in a local newspaper for (2) two weeks and on this website.

                      WE ARE CURRENTLY HIRING FOR A JAIL ADMINISTRATOR

Jail Administrator- Open until filled

 The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office seeks an enthusiastic and proven leader to assume role of Administrator for the Gloucester County Jail.  The jail currently houses an average of 80 inmates and a staff of 25.  Position requires independent judgment, a proven record of leadership, a proven record of good relations with staff and other agencies, a proven record of sound fiscal and personnel management and a proven record of crisis management skills.

The Jail Administrator reports to the Sheriff and is part of the agency’s senior management team.  The salary range is $53,788 to $80,682 annually and the position receives full county benefits.

                  The application process for sworn and non-sworn personnel is as follows:

  1. Submit completed application, typed resume’, and notary page by mail or in person at 7502 Justice Drive, Gloucester, VA 23061
  2. Applications are reviewed for completeness. Incomplete applications are rejected.
  3. An initial check will be made for Criminal History, Driving Record, and Credit Check. Automatic disqualifiers will apply (See, Appointment Criteria).
  4. Qualified applicants will be invited for a written test. The test is a multiple choice exam by IPMA and is entry level. Passing score is 70%.
  5. Applicants will be contacted for a panel interview. This is a question and answer opportunity. Successful applicants move on to the next step.
  6. Background investigation by a Criminal Investigator. Check of all listed and non-listed references.
  7. Polygraph examination.
  8. Staff reviews of top applicants and conditional offer of employment.
  9. Medical examination/Drug screening.
  10. Psychological examination.
  11. New employee start date.

New employees meet with County Human Resources for a Benefits Meeting. Those requiring Police Academy training will normally start within a few days of hire. Experienced certified officers will be assigned field training. All others receive on the job training
