Domestic Violence Code of Virginia §18.2-57.2, Assault & Battery against a family or household member. Domestic Violence:
If you are being hurt: Call 911 immediately. Relay to the 911 operator how you are being hurt. When the Deputy arrives explain what happened.
Plan for your safety: Have an alternate place to stay (with relatives or friends). Plan for the safety of your children. Keep a list of phone numbers of people who can help you.
If you have been assaulted the Deputy will: File criminal charges against your abuser. The Deputy will do this, you do not have to file the
charges. your abuser from making any contact with you. Assist you in finding a safe place to stay. Assist you in contacting an advocate who will assist you. An investigator will contact you about options available to you and assist you in the court process. Provide you information on contacting the Victim/Witness program.
If you need continued protection the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office will assist you in obtaining a protective order that will prohibit your abuser from making any contact with you for up to two years.
