Underground Railroad Exhibit

February

Learn about the secret code...quilts were used to direct people escaping via the underground railroad.

To the left is the "Monkey Wrench" quilt pattern.  A monkey wrench is a heavy tool used by a blacksmith.  A quilt with this pattern would alert slaves to gather tools and supplies they would need when they escaped.

To the right is the "Flying Geese" quilt pattern.  Flying birds could give fleeing slaves direction, timing and behavior.  The geese fly north in the spring and their honking noises make following their flight easier.

Interpretive panels and a quilt will be on display.  Free and open to all during regular Visitor Center hours!
