County Buildings: Colonial Court Green
We provide general maintenance and custodial care for all county
buildings.
Gloucester
County's buildings date from the Colonial Era through the Twenty-first Century. Our most picturesque collection is grouped on the Colonial Court
Green (left) which is surrounded by a low brick wall. On the photo's right
side are the Colonial Courthouse, the Old Clerk's Office, and the Debtor's
Jail. Facing them across the Green are the Clayton
Building, the Roane
Building, and the Old Jail.
In the center of the Green is a Civil War Monument. Another monument
honoring a Civil War hero, Gloucester's only Congressional Medal of Honor
recipient, Private James Daniel Gardner, was erected in May 2006, several years
after this photograph was taken.
The
Gloucester County Courthouse Square Historic District is a designated
Virginia Historic Landmark. Although they appear old and quaint, all of
these buildings provide work space for modern County functions. The
Colonial Courthouse (left) is used for board meetings which are televised
on our local cable channel. Adjoining it is the old Clerk's
Office which now houses various County offices.

The Debtor's Prison (left) is currently
undergoing renovation.
Below are links to pictures of other buildings not on the Court
Green.
