| Clayton Building: This building is believed
to the the oldest in the Courthouse Historic District, and it originally
served as the Clerk's Office from its construction around 1690 through about
1890. The building has two rooms, one with a fireplace, and floors of
random size stones brought over from England and unlike other other floors in
this area. John Clayton, the famous botanist, served as Clerk of Gloucester
County for over fifty years, until his death in 1773.
