    Scrapbooking for Teens with Ronda Bowden (3 Class Series) Ages 11-14 Tuesday, January 17th Tuesday, January 24th Tuesday, January 31st 3:30pm-4:45pm We will get a journal started that you can expand upon throughout the year. Collect and bring images you like about topics you like, and we will make a useful tool that is also a snapshot of your life right now. We will use hand lettering and collage to embellish your journal. In addition to your images bring your favorite gel pens, markers and colored pencils. In searching for images, consider take-out menus, wrapping paper, greeting cards, comics, candy wrappers and calendars. All materials other than personal images will be provided for students. Students will combine paper collage, paper-marbling, watercolor, and acrylic paints to create their collage painting. Nia will provide paper marbling supplies. Students will need to bring their own papers for collaging and a small canvas or mixed media/watercolor paper to use as a surface to collage on. Cost of class is $50 per student.   7. Beginner’s Color Theory in Acrylics with Juli Schuszler (4-Class Series) at Arts on Main

    Students will learn color theory by creating acrylic on canvas paintings. They will learn how to mix colors and apply color schemes for both visual appeal and meaning. They will first apply basic mixing skills to paint a color wheel painting and value scales. Then, they will create a monochromatic painting, an analogous landscape, and a Pop Art painting with a complementary color scheme. Time permitting, they will create a landscape in the Impressionist style, using dots and dabs of color and complimentary colors for shadows.     Did you know that in addition to conducting cutting-edge research and educating the next generations of marine scientists, VIMS advises the Commonwealth on matters related to marine science? Join Emily Hein, Assistant Director for Advisory Services, as she discusses how VIMS science-based recommendations are used by regulators to inform decisions on projects ranging from backyard erosion on tidal creeks, to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion Project, to oil spill response. We are excited to offer this lecture in-person in McHugh Auditorium on VIMS' Gloucester Point Campus! This lecture will also be available as a live-streamed webinar. Your quirky snippets, papers, jewelry, fabric, or any small odds and ends can be layered to create a charming and personal piece of art. If you want to practice without worrying about ruining a special object, extra supply packets will be available to purchase for $5 a bag so you can play with a free spirit. You will learn how to layer paint, paper, photos, trims, fabric and more. We will learn different types of gluing, fusing and stitching methods to build interesting layers for your pieces.
